Junior Membership Committee

The National Junior Membership Committee was established in 1937. The goals are:  to gain new Junior members; to build a well-informed Junior membership; to encourage active participation in all phases of DAR service; and to support the National Junior Membership Committee’s official fund-raising project - the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund.

A Junior Member is a DAR member age 18 through 35 years of age (until her 36th birthday).  She holds full membership in the National Society, State Society, and Chapter, and when qualified, she may serve as an officer and chairman at all levels.  Texas Juniors are college students, career women, and stay-at-home moms.  Juniors join DAR for a variety of reasons and have diverse interests. Working together for a common goal forges many friendships and offers endless opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Texas Society supports Junior Membership by encouraging active participation within all levels of the organization. Juniors are the future of DAR. Texas Daughters are proud of our Juniors!

Helen Pouch Memorial Fund

The Helen Pouch Memorial Fund is the National Junior Membership Committee’s official fund-raising project.  This fund is named in memory of Helen Pouch (1901-1919) who was the daughter of Mrs. William H. Pouch, the first National Chairman of the Junior Membership Committee in 1937, and later President General, 1941-1944.  The fund provides scholarships, medical aid, and general financial assistance to the two DAR supported schools, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama, and Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina.

The kangaroo represents the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund.  Texas Juniors display Tex and her daughter, Tex Ann, at every state function.  Both are dressed to serve as pages, wearing  their white dresses, gloves, pearls, and sash.  The sash features a cameo, the symbol of a multi-generational club.

Juniors' Choice Chapter

A Junior's Best Friend...The Juniors' Choice Chapter Award honors the chapter which best promotes and supports Juniors and Junior Projects.  Chapters encourage Junior participation in all levels of DAR, committee work, and activities.  Past winners have focused on recruiting Junior members, sponsored a Junior fundraising event, and arranged for babysitting during meetings and other DAR events.  Each year, the Texas Junior Membership Council honors the Texas chapter winner on Opening Night of State Conference.

Lady Washington Chapter, Lisa Lents, Chapter Regent

Lady Washington Chapter of Houston was awarded the Junior’s Choice Chapter award for their outstanding support of Juniors.  This Chapter goes above and beyond in their overall donations to the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund and at least 20 of their members wear the Best Friend of Junior Membership pin.  The Lady Washington Chapter appoints Juniors as committee chairmen, nominates Juniors as delegates and holds special Junior events.  This chapter “believes Junior Members are essential to the success of DAR.  The Juniors get a feel for just how important they are because we always find ways to get them involved.”  Congratulations to Lisa Lents, Regent, and Jessica Brewer, Chapter Junior Membership Chairman, for their chapter’s excellent efforts!

Honorary Junior Member

The title of Honorary Junior was created in 2004 and is awarded annually to a Texas Daughter who is not currently a Junior Member, but is a strong advocate for Junior Membership.  The honor is held for the member's lifetime.  These ladies, nominated by fellow Texas Daughters, are considered to be "Juniors at heart" and show extraordinary support for Juniors.  They help Juniors by supporting Junior activities and promoting Junior Membership.  Honorary Juniors receive an official Texas crown and sash.  Shown below are all of our Honorary Juniors.

Pages Committee

Pages are members 40 years of age and younger who serve as hostesses, personal assistants, and flag-bearers at national and state events.  Serving as a page is a great way to learn the inner workings of DAR.  The Texas Society holds their state conferences on weekends to accommodate the diverse needs of pages.  Serving as a page is an excellent way to meet other Juniors and members of the organization.  Pages have developed lifelong friendships with treasured memories.  They have FUN serving the Society!

2010 State Conference Pages

Outstanding Conference Page

Every year at the State Conference, one Page is chosen to receive the honor of Outstanding Conference Page.  This is an award presented by the State Regent.  Generally, there are three anonymous judges chosen from the attendees at the conference.  Throughout the conference the judges are on the lookout for the Page that stands out among all others.  Some of the qualities they look for include helpfulness, knowledge and willingness to assist.  For many years, the award has gone to ladies who were paging for the very first time—their enthusiasm and cooperative spirit winning the day!
