The Captain William Sanders Chapter was named for the Revolutionary Ancestor of our Organizing Regent, Stella Corcoran White, when she organized the chapter in 1937.

William Sanders was born in Beaufort, NC, on 20 February 1760. He married Patience Benthal in Beaufort City in 1783. They were parents of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters.

During the Revolutionary War, William Sanders served as a Private, a Sergeant, then as a Lieutenant of the 4th North Carolina Regiment. He was commissioned a Captain on 8 February 1779 when he was 19 years old. His name appeared on a record of the proceedings of a board of officers of the North Carolina Line dated 6 February 1782.

Sanders fought in the battle of Briar Creek near the Savannah River in Georgia, where he served under General Lincoln.

Captain William Sanders died in Jonesboro, Alabama on 15 March 1847 at 87 years of age.
