The Captain William Sanders
Chapter, NSDAR, Port Arthur, Texas was named for the
Revolutionary Ancestor of our Founder and first Regent,
Stella Corcoran White when she organized the chapter in
1937.
Mrs. Stella Corcoran White
joined DAR on April 21, 1924. She was a member of the
Colonel George Moffett Chapter in Beaumont, Texas. When
Mrs. White and a few other members of that chapter discussed having a chapter in their home town, Port
Arthur, she began to to talk to people and write letters
to learn what it would take.
The National Board of
Management appointed Stella White as Organizing Regent of
the new Port Arthur chapter.
The organizing meeting was
held on October 7, 1937. Guests were the Texas State
Regent; Miss Marion Mullins, the immediate past State Regent and (then) present Vice
President General of NSDAR; Mrs. Maurice Clark Turner,
State Treasurer; Mrs. Crestman, past State Corresponding
Secretary. Members of the
Colonel George Moffett Chapter in Beaumont in attendance were Mrs. Rush
Norvell, Organizing and Honorary Past Regent, and
Mrs. Wallace B. Livesay, Chapter Regent.

Chapter growth reached a peak in the early 1980s
with 140 members. In 2005, we have 49 members.
We celebrate Constitution Day with
library displays, programs, and luncheons with surrounding
chapters. We donate books to the genealogy section of the
Port Arthur Library and we are strong in giving scholarships. We
honor our Good Citizens
from the local schools.
Our main interest is
education and we give twenty scholarships each year to students chosen
from five area high schools. In her will, Mrs. White provided a
very generous endowment fund to be used solely for scholarships.
We meet
monthly on the second Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
